There are 2 endings when you finish the last mission, Halo. There is a rumor that there is a third ending if you activate all the skulls. This is not true.
The first ending is shown when you successfully complete the game in Easy, Normal or Heroic difficulty. If you completed the mission on Legendary, there will be a second ending after the credits.
First Ending (Normal Ending)
The first ending shows Admiral Hood giving his speech at the Memorial for those perished in the war. In the background, the front half of the ship, Forward Unto Dawn enters the Earth atmosphere and crash on Earth. The Arbiter is freed from the wreckage, after an engineer cut into the Dawn.
Later, the Admiral and the Arbiter stand alone in-front of the Memorial, which is decorated with pictures of the those fallen, including Commander Miranda Keyes and Sergeant Major Avery Johnson. Admiral Hood thanked the Arbiter for standing by him (Master Chief?) to the end. The Arbiter shakes Admiral Hood's hand. Admiral Hood says "Hard to believe he's dead."
The Arbiter then left with the Separatist in the Shadow of Intent, towards their home planet. The cut-scene then switched to the memorial. It was shown that the number "117" is scratched on the memorial underneath the print "UNSCDF March 3 2553", which is dedicated to Master Chief. This then ends with the credits.
Second Ending After Credits (On Legendary)
After the credits end. Master Chief is shown floating inside the remaining half of the Dawn, which is floating aimlessly in space.
Master Chief drift further inside and managed to find a panel to plug Cortana in. Cortana mentioned that the Flood is finished and she will drop a beacon and that it will take a while for someone to find them.
Master Chief then get into the Cryotube, which then seals and freezes the Chief.
The back half of the Forward Unto Dawn is seen drifting towards an unknown planet. There is an eclipse of the sun. Slowly the sun comes out from behind the planet and the light blinds the camera.
