The Halo 3 Armor of Master Chief is Mark VI armor is the latest model of the MJOLNIR powered battle armor project. This is the default armor of Master Chief for the solo campaign. This Mark VI energy shield is able to withstand considerable damage and is able to recover faster than the earlier models.
There are many variants of the standard Mark IV armor. Most of the variants except for the CQB Armor are locked by default. The locked armor variants can be unlocked once certain achievements are earned. The player can change to the unlocked armor but it will be active or visible only on the online or multiplayer mode.
The Close Quarter Battle (CQB) armors were designed to provide better protection for close combats. This is unlocked by default.
The Spartan armor consists of the helmet, shoulders and the body pieces. There are altogether 11 helmets, 8 shoulder pieces and 8 body pieces.
The Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) armor is designed to withstand damage from explosives and landmines. The EOD helmet will be unlocked upon completion of the Halo 3 campaign on Legendary. To unlock the EOD shoulder, complete The Ark mission on Legendary. Finally, to unlock the EOD body, you must complete Tsavo Highway mission on Legendary.

EVA (Shoulders) - Complete The Ark (Normal, Heroic or Legendary)
EVA (Body) - Complete Tsavo Highway (Normal, Heroic or Legendary)
Scout (Helmet) - Get the Used Car Salesman Achievement
Scout (Shoulders) - Get the We're in for Some Chop Achievement
Scout (Body) - Get the Too Close to the Sun Achievement
Security (Helmet) - Get 1000 Gamerscore points
Scout (Shoulders) - Get 750 Gamerscore points
Hayabusa (Helmet) - Collect 13 skulls
Hayabusa (Shoulders) - Collect 9 skulls
Hayabusa (Body) - Collect 6 skulls
Katana (Complete) - Achieve 1000 Gamerscore points
ODST (Helmet) - Get Graduate Achievement (Online)
Mark V (Helmet) - Get the UNSC Spartan Achievement (Online)
Rogue (Helmet) - Get Spartan Officer Achievement (Online)
The Hayabusa and the Katana armor are the most impressive. The Katana which has a sword at the back, can be unlocked once 1000 Gamerscore points are achieved.
